Master of Arts in Language & Literature

The Master of Arts in Language and Literature (MALL) is designed to provide training in language and literature as intersecting fields of study. It equips its students with theoretical and pedagogic competencies in these areas of knowledge, and provides a forum for critical discussions and studies on linguistic and literary issues. It also engages its students in significant research projects on various topics related language, literature and wider field of cultural studies.

Background

First implemented in 1997-1998, the Master of Arts in Language and Literature (MALL) Program emerged from the same vision when the Diploma in Language and Literature
Program of then Humanities Division was instituted in 1995, namely to address the need in the CAR and other neighboring regions for quality education in language and literature as
two separate tracks of specialization. After seven years of implementation, a curricular review in 2004 recommended a revision to make the curriculum follow a dual language and literature specialization to serve the needs of its clientele who follow an integrated approach in their language education curriculum.

About 90 percent of its clientele come from the various levels of the educational sector. Particularly in support of tertiary level teachers, the MALL program has been CHED’s
delivering program for its Faculty Development Program to improve the quality of instruction in tertiary level schools in Northern Luzon.

At present, the MALL program follows the Thesis track, which provides the students a rigorous research experience to prepare them for a doctoral education or to enable them to engage in research as academics.

General Objective

The Master of Arts in Language and Literature (MALL) Program seeks to address the need in the CAR and other regions for quality education in language and literature in all levels of the educational system.

Program Objective

The MALL Program aims to produce graduates who are able to: 1) effectively apply theories grounded in language and literary theories; 2) apply current methods, techniques, technologies in language and literature instruction and research; and 3) participate and contribute to discussions of relevant issues in language and literature.

Target Clientele

The MALL Program is particularly suited to teachers of language and literature, school administrators and supervisors, teacher educators, and researchers intending to pursue projects that implicate language and literature. It may also be taken by other college graduates who wish to upgrade and update their linguistic and literary competencies, or to shift to another area of expertise.

Admission

To qualify for admission, applicants must:

• Have a bachelor’s degree in language/literature or related specialization
or experience in teaching language/literature;
• Have intellectual capacity and aptitude for advanced studies and research;
• Have a general weighted average (GWA) of 2.0 or higher in their
bachelor’s program (Applicants who fail to meet this requirement but
have adequate experience in teaching language or literature may be
considered for admission); and
• Pass the MALL admission test and panel interview.

TOEFL or IELTS Requirement for Foreign Students

Proof of English and/or Filipino proficiency shall be required of students whose native language is not English or Filipino, except those who graduated from institutions where the medium of instruction is English or Filipino. For English proficiency, a score of at least 500 in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a band score of at least 7 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic module shall be required. For Filipino proficiency, a certification shall be required from a duly authorized unit of the University.

MALL Admission Test

The admission test is an assessment of the applicant’s knowledge of theories in language and literature. It will be in English and Filipino and the student has the option to answer in either of these languages.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must submit the following:

• Duly accomplished application form (UPB-GP Form 1)
• Official Transcript of Records (OTR) of undergraduate and graduate work, original and one (1) photocopy
• Accomplished Reference Report from (UPB-GP Form 2) from one (1) employer/ immediate supervisor and
two (2) teacher references
• For married women, two (2) copies of their marriage contract and two (2) copies of their birth certificate
• Application and testing fee
• Two (2) written recommendations from former professors or experts in the field
• Motivation letter

Each application shall be submitted to the University’s Graduate Program Office (GPO) and referred to the MALL Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) for evaluation. The deserving applicant shall be recommended for admission by the latter to the Dean through channels.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The College of Arts and Communication, UP Baguio, has also been designated as a delivering institution of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Faculty Development Program, which offers a limited number of scholarship grants.
