In a world full of complex problems and strife, design takes center stage as designers assume a new role where they begin to design to address real-life issues. This kind of design is no more ubiquitous and pronounced than in the works of Good Design Award Philippines awardees where their designs are fueled with malasakit, the Filipino virtue of compassion and good will to others. In this session, we will get to hear from present winners of the Good Design Award Philippines and learn a thing or two on how to design with malasakit. Speakers Robby Sylianteng โ€“ First United Building โ€“ Malasakit Awardee (gran prix) Adrian De Guzman โ€“ Right to Care Card Donโ€™t miss this chance! Prof. Leia Fidelis Gisela F. Castro-Margate and Jethro Bryan Andrada on "Platform Configuration and Emerging Community Journalism Practices in the Cordillera.โ€ The lecture was held on September 24, 2025, at the CSS-AVR. The discussion comes after the Baguio Midland Courier ceased operations in 2023. The Courier was the longest-running community newspaper in the country. In 2023, it ended a 77-year journalism legacy. Widely regarded as an icon of Baguio City, its shutdown was seen as a major setback for local journalism. The lecture addressed the questions: how are the remaining community media in Baguio faring? And how do they continue to survive today? Asst. Prof. Castro-Margate and Andrada examined how newsrooms navigate social media platforms and adopt new strategies for survival, using platform configuration. They further raised the possibility of creating a sustainable model for community journalism in the Cordillera amid the continuing transition to digital media. Text by Gwenn T. Speak truth to power. "Influence Operations in the 2025 Midterm Elections," a lecture-discussion on disinformation, political campaigns, and the 2025 Midterm Elections engaged more than 100 students and faculty members at Teatro Amianan on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Sigla Research Center's Head of Public Engagement, Ferdinand Sanchez II discussed Common Ground and Sigla's relevant findings in their upcoming research report on how disinformation in our online platforms are embedded within political campaign strategies and how it shapes electoral outcomes. He discussed the mechanisms of influence operations in the 2025 Midterm elections as sustained in the persistence of curated personalities among public figures through embedded practices in various online platforms. He also highlighted how disinformation can be combatted beyond traditional fact-checking by reinforcing community engagement among local institutions and civil society organizations (CSO). Sigla Research Center's Managing Director, Rossine Fallorina also joined the discussion by sharing insights with the students and faculty members. Jularbal delivering a lecture entitled โ€œHeadhunting in the Age of Benevolent Assimilation: A Rhetorical Analysis of Colonial Discourses on Headhunting in the Highlands of Northern Luzon (1900s to 1930s).โ€ Held on September 19, 2025 at the CSS-AVR, the lecture discussed written texts about headhunting made during the American colonial period, that is, from 1903 to 1933. The texts comprise travel writings, anthropological narratives, as well as autobiographies. Dr. Jularbal said examining these texts for its rhetorical value would show an imperialistic colonial discourse, setting off categories that define structure of American colonial grand narratives. Headhunting tropes that began during the Spanish period and were carried on towards the American colonial administration were analyzed using rhetorical themes of universalism, evolutionism, and utilitarianism intertwined with the objectives of humanitarianism, manifest destiny, as well as moral ascendancy. These themes find renewed energy and reinvention under themes of evolving capitalism and touristic apprehension. The Saliksik lectures are sponsored by educator, anthropologist, and folklorist Dr. Maria Carmen Domingo-Kirk. Text by: Gwenn T. Estravila/UPB-OPA Photos by Justin R. Pincaro and Gwenn T. YOU ARE INVITED! Join us for Saliksik Kordilyera Lecture Series with Dr. Io M. Jularbal, Dean of the College of Arts and Communication, UP Baguio. We'll see you on 19 September 2025 (Friday), 3:00 pm onwards, at the CSS AVR, UP Baguio. ABSTRACT This is a presentation of various texts on headhunting written during the American period from 1903 to 1933. Consisting mainly of travel narratives, anthropological pieces, and autobiographies, headhunting during this period would obtain a renewed rhetorical valuing as it would again obtain currency as part of an imperialistic colonial discourse that would now figure in categories that define structures of American colonial grand narratives. Headhunting, though still falling prey to enduring dichotomies anchored on tropes as initially espoused by the Spanish, are reinterpreted and become essential to new rhetorical themes of universalism, evolutionism, utilitarianism, finding itself intertwined with objectives of humanitarianism, manifest destiny, as well as moral ascendancy, constantly revived, duplicated but also renewed and reinvented under themes of evolving capitalism and a new emerging touristic apprehension. #CordilleraStudiesCenter #UPBaguio #universityofthephilippinesbaguio
