UP Baguio represented at the Association of Pinoyprintmakers' 2024 Exhibit "On Site" In the morning of Saturday, October 19, 2024, the Association of Pinoyprintmakers' (A/P) 2024 exhibit "On Site" officially opened at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet, third floor of Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez, Cultural Center of the Philippines complex, Manila. Various works by individual artists and groups that practice printmaking are featured. Among the participants are printmakers from the University of the Philippines Baguio. Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Jandy A. Carvajal, a member of the A/P, coordinated and co-curated for UP Baguio. A landscape print of fellow FA faculty and A/P member Fara Manuel-Nolasco is showcased on their designated wall, along with Jandy's prints and the creations of a number of UPB FA alumni and recent students. They are FM Monteverde, Sarah Jane Tarriela, Silvino Dulnuan, Jemielou Delos Reyes and John Ray Dizon. While the subjects and sizes of their prints vary, these are connected by the relief printmaking technique with which the works were produced, particularly by rubbercut. Some of the pieces on the UPB wall are outputs of a printmaking demo-workshop conducted on site by Jandy, FM and Sarah last October 5. The exhibit features creations from faculty and students of other schools as well, including UP Cebu and De La Salle College of Saint Benilde. Thus, the exhibit also highlights how printmaking connects communities and generations. "On Site" runs until November 19, 2024 at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet, third floor of Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez, Cultural Center of the Philippines complex, Manila. poster credit: CCP VAMD and A/P photos credit: JACarvajal and JD Reyes

NEWS FEATURE | Rekindling the Fire: The Birth of Communidad by Anna Patricia Adiaz Amidst the shifting tides of journalism, with traditional print giving way to the digital realm, a new voice has emerged at the College of Arts and Communication, University of the Philippines Baguio. Communidad, the freshly launched laboratory publication of the Department of Communication’s journalism program, is more than just a student publication—it showcases campus journalism excellence for the UPB community and the wider public, upholding the commitment to provide a platform for meaningful discourse on pressing local and national issues. A Vision Shaped by Necessity The journey toward Communidad was not a mere academic exercise, but driven by an urgent need to evolve. With more newspapers and publications transitioning online and community papers disappearing one by one, the question arose: "Why not take the leap?" This transition offered students a platform to showcase their best works, making their efforts visible not only within UP Baguio but to a wider audience. The goal was twofold. First, to provide a paper that keeps pace with the ever-changing social and political landscape. And second, to recognize and celebrate the hard work of journalism students by publishing their works online—something that they may not have the courage to do on their own. Through Communidad, there is a louder voice in the community for their talents and stories to be heard. The Visuals The name Communidad was chosen to encapsulate the essence of the publication's mission: fostering communication within and beyond the university. Selected through a contest involving students, the name embodies the spirit of inclusivity and dialogue. It reflects the publication's goal of serving as a platform for engaging with broader social issues and connecting with the larger community. The name is significant because it speaks to the heart of journalism—communicating stories that matter and creating a sense of shared experience. In terms of visual identity, the logo underwent several iterations to represent both tradition and progress. It features a blend of classic journalistic elements with modern digital aesthetics, symbolizing the paper's commitment to embracing the changing landscape of media. The "D" in the logo signifies the enduring values of journalism while the "C" represents the shift towards online platforms, acknowledging the necessity for digital adaptation in contemporary reporting. The Faces Behind the Words Communidad has two pillars: the Editorial Board (EB) and the Editorial Advisory Board (EAB). Journalism students from UP Baguio take charge as the Editorial Board every semester, with the first batch hailing from this semester’s Online Journalism class, bringing fresh ideas and youthful energy to the paper. Meanwhile, the EAB consists of the Department of Communication’s journalism faculty who provide guidance and support to the editorial board. The EAB curates the best works from their students and alumni, which the Editorial Board then repackages for publication. The roles are collaborative, with each semester bringing in new student editors, ensuring a continuous flow of perspectives and innovations. Journalism professor Leia Castro-Margate, who initially conceived the idea, explains that it was about time to put the students' works to good use and allow their voices to reach not just the UPB community but the wider public. Department Chairperson Zenas Chapap-Dulatre also believes that Communidad is a great way to showcase the students’ works. “When we were talking about the paper, we were really thinking of an avenue or outlet where we can showcase our students’ works because we’re proud of them. Despite the fact that we encourage the students to publish their work every semester that we teach journalism, we find that not everyone has the courage to go to publications and ask to publish their work,” Chapap-Dularte said. What to Expect At its core, Communidad promises to deliver stories that matter, from the classrooms and beyond; tackling social, cultural, and political issues that resonate with the larger community. The publication embraces a unique approach, grounded yet never conventional, aiming to marry journalistic standards with the values and needs of the local audience. Nikki Shane Pillejera, Communidad’s first Editor-in-Chief said, “Running Communidad is definitely going to be a challenge, but I also know it’s going to be worthwhile. Opportunity kasi siya to shape a sustainable platform where campus journalism can thrive. We want to focus not just on publishing quality content, but also ensuring continuity and growth with each new editorial team." Behind its Architecture Launching Communidad was not without its hurdles. At first, the faculty members were uncertain whether students could handle the demands of sustaining a publication, especially with the declining number of journalism majors in UPB. Concerns about maintaining regular output and the uncertainty of community reception also weighed heavily. Yet, what started as doubts quickly transformed into determination. The faculty's excitement grew, with many believing that the publication was long overdue. It provided a long-awaited platform for quality student work and served as an innovative solution to modern challenges in journalism education. Communidad’s Future The vision for Communidad reaches far beyond being a training ground for journalism students. The long-term goal is to establish it as an institution at UPB, with recognition and support from the administration. As local community papers continue to disappear, Communidad aspires to step in by being a reliable and trusted source of news, demonstrating how journalism can thrive in this digital age. The launch of Communidad is a new chapter for journalism at UP Baguio. It is a bold statement about the future of student-led media. In an era where local news outlets are dwindling, Communidad steps in to bridge the gap, providing a vital platform for students to amplify their voices and for the community to stay informed. The publication serves as a model for how academic programs can evolve, adapt, and innovate, leveraging digital platforms to keep the spirit of journalism alive. Moving forward, the publication seeks to establish itself as a trusted and respected voice in the local media landscape. With every new editorial team, Communidad will continue to build on its foundations and push the boundaries of campus journalism while staying true to its mission: to communicate stories that matter and foster a sense of community. The journey has only just begun, but the fire that Communidad has kindled is set to grow stronger with each passing semester. Through resilience and dedication to journalistic excellence, the publication hopes to inspire future generations to continue telling stories that reflect the complexities of our world, ensuring that campus journalism remains a vital force for change. #UPBCommunidad #CommunidadFeature #UPBJournalism
