Department of Communication

The Department of Communication (DC) offers the Bachelor of Arts in Communication program. The department’s vision is to train communication scholars who imbibe UP’s time-honored values of honor and excellence and to take the lead in contributing to the public good through communication practice and research.

To realize this vision, the department’s mission includes:
•Delivering an excellent communication program to ground students in theory and to develop desirable skills
•Developing communication practitioners with a high sense of ethics and civic responsibility
•Cultivating a culture of research and practice that will integrate social, cultural, and scientific approaches for the production of democratic forms of communication.

Faculty members of the department specialize in various areas of communication such as journalism, broadcast communication, and speech communication. These are also the areas of concentration in the Bachelor of Arts in Communication program.

The BA Communication Program

Instituted in 2002, the BA Communication Program offers three areas of concentration: Broadcast Communication, Journalism, and Speech Communication. Students in the program choose a major and a minor from these areas (major in Broadcast Communication, major in Journalism, major in Speech Communication, minor in Broadcast Communication, minor in Journalism, minor in Speech Communication). The program requires a set of core communication courses for all three disciplines.
