On November 23, an Introduction to Repoussรฉ workshop, organized by the Society for the Visual Arts (SVA), was held at the Darnay Demetillo Art Space (DDAS), College of Arts and Communication. The workshop was facilitated by Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Jandy A. Carvajal, who had his first exploration of repoussรฉ in 1991. For more than a decade, he has been re-exploring and practicing this time-honored art of embossing metal sheets. Participants of the workshop consisted of students from UPB and other schools, as well as visual artists who wanted to try a new art form. In the three-hour near-meditative workshop, they were able to produce a variety of relief sculptures with common materials and improvised tools that Sir Jandy advised using, such as aluminum pans and popsicle sticks. This underscores how artmaking entails and fosters resourcefulness. It can also be calming. The creative outputs were promptly displayed at the DDAS in the exhibit titled "First Foray into Repoussรฉ", co-curated by Asst. Prof. Carvajal and the SVA team present. Perspectives on Cordilleran Weaponry with Dean Io M. Jularbal On October 22, 2024, the UP Baguio Program for Indigenous Cultures opens the IP Month lecture Series with the "Cordilleran Weaponry," talk presented by Dean Io M. Jularbal, Ph.D. Dean Io intrigued the audience with insights into the rich history and cultural significance of traditional weaponry in the Cordillera region. His discussion not only highlighted the craftsmanship behind these tools but also underscored on their roles in both warfare and daily life among Indigenous communities. It was a fascinating exploration of how these weapons are more than just artifactsโ€”they embody stories, skills, and cultural identity. If you missed this lecture, donโ€™t worry! There are more talks lined up for the IP Month Lecture Series. To stay updated on future events, be sure to follow the UP Baguio Program for Indigenous Cultures on their Facebook page. However, a quick advisory: due to the effects of Typhoon Kristine, some of the upcoming lecture series have been postponed. They will be rescheduled for a later date, so keep an eye out for announcements on the rescheduling. Stay tuned for more enriching discussions and celebrations of Indigenous culture! #IndigenousPeoplesMonth2024 #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #SDG4 #fp7 #UPBaguio
