"Mahirap ang trabaho ng kape” “Ma’am Tere” is a 36-minute documentary that follows coffee producer (and UP Baguio alumna) Tere Domine and a group of Filipinos in the diaspora on a journey through coffee farms in Bukidnon and Sitio Belis and Sitio Naguey in Atok. The film had its Baguio premiere at UP Baguio’s Teatro Amianan this morning to an audience that Tere noted as “representing the whole coffee value chain” from the Atok farmers featured in the documentary to local coffee roasters, coffee shop owners, and consumers. The documentary gives an overview of the hard work that goes into coffee farming with Ma’am Tere, as the farmers call her, as the main storyteller. Though brief, filmmaker Paul Barreto is also able to capture and include a conversation in Atok about backyard coffee. In Benguet, backyard coffee is the coffee that families traditionally plant for their children when they are about to get married. This will then serve as the main source of coffee of the newlyweds and the family that they will build together.
