UP Baguio Fine Arts Faculty Members Feature in International, National, and Local Art Exhibitions The UP Baguio College of Arts and Communication commends Fine Arts faculty members Ides Macapanpan, Joseph Andrew Carvajal, and Danielle Florendo for participating in and headlining major art exhibitions across Gwangju in South Korea, Intramuros in the City of Manila, and Baguio City this September. Ms. Macapanpan joins the roster of Filipino artist delegates representing the Philippines at the 16th Gwangju Biennale through the Philippine Pavilion’s exhibition, "Studies in Time," curated by Lisa Ito-Tapang. Macapanpan’s installation, "Winala, Nawawala, Nawalan" (Disappeared, Missing, Lost), confronts enforced disappearances in the Philippines from 1972 to the present through a multi-sensory work of hung garments, engraved acrylic sheets bearing the names of desaparecidos, and an audio litany reciting the names of desaparecidos to demand state accountability for the disappearances. Associate Professor Carvajal opens his solo exhibition, "Material Explorations," curated by Alain Zendrick Camiling, on September 7, 2026, at Gallery B of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in Intramuros, City of Manila. Drawing from his years of exploring the repoussé technique, Assoc. Prof. Carvajal transforms salvaged aluminum, biscuit tin can covers, matchboxes, egg cartons, soil, and more into new artistic possibilities while honoring familiar images of Mater Dei. In Baguio City, Ms. Florendo joins a group of artists in "First Light," the inaugural exhibition of The Jade Gallery at Hotel Supreme Mall & Events Center. The show runs through September 30, 2026. Florendo showcases watercolor works that interweave expressive portraits, local flora, and imagery to explore the Filipino culture and domestic life. The College invites the public to support these artists and engage with their work. Its first iteration constructs a maze with walls of clothes, giving tangible form to the bodies, memories, and the very act of finding desaparecidos—civilians and activists forcibly disappeared under state power, from the Martial Law of Marcos Sr., to the Duterte Regime, and to the present Marcos administration. The installation evokes the labyrinth of uncertainty endured by the families left behind. Featured in 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲, the Philippine Pavilion of the 16th Gwangju Biennale, Ides Macapanpan's installation pursues the exploration of the phenomenon of enforced disappearances through the addition of acrylic sheets and audio recordings. The 2×2 ft acrylic sheets feature the engraved names and abduction dates of the Desaparecidos, tracing back to the 1972 declaration of martial law up to the present. Twenty-nine of the 55 sheets are on display in Korea, with the rest scheduled for exhibition in the Philippines. The audio features a solemn litany listing 1,908 Desaparecidos, reciting each individual's name alongside the date of their abduction. The installation converses with the Pavilion’s venue, 5.18 Archives, and a section of its permanent exhibition titled 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥/𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘫𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥/𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥/𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨, which houses archival records and objects of the historic May 18 Uprising, Gwangju’s democratization movement against Martial Law that resulted in the death, detention, and execution of 5,000 people. Parola stands in solidarity and asserts the call to surface all victims of enforced disappearances and make the Marcos-Duterte regime accountable. 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 is an exhibition of the Philippine Pavilion at the 16th Gwangju Biennale, curated by Lisa Ito-Tapang, presented by the UP College of Fine Arts, UP Fine Arts Gallery, and the UP President’s Committee on Culture and the Arts. The exhibition will be on view at the 5.18 Archives, Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, Dong-gu, Geumnam-ro 221, South Korea, from September 5, 2026, to November 1, 2026. [1] Excerpt from the abstract of Ides Macapanpan’s master’s thesis titled WINALA: Ang Dialektiko ng Espasyong Inokupa, Inookupa, Ookupahin ng mga Winala, Nawawala, Nawalan (Isang Pag-aaral at Installation Art). ____________ 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗦 𝗠𝗔𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗣𝗔𝗡 is a cultural worker and Instructor at the University of the Philippines Baguio.
