UP Baguio confers 14th Darnay Demetillo Artist Award The University of the Philippines Baguio held the 14th Darnay Demetillo Artist Award (DDAA) awarding ceremony and exhibit opening on June 26, 2026, at Darnay Demetillo Art Space, College of Arts and Communication. Mac Daryll Manto, who recently obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree this year, was the juror’s choice. In a unanimous decision, the jury recognized Malto’s body of work for its compelling artistic vision, noting that his “distinct voice reveals art and artistic practice as integral to placemaking: a transformation of space into place—the locus of belonging, identity, and memory." The ceremony also recognized this year’s nominees: Fine Arts (FA) sophomore Russel Kim Abad, graduating Certificate of Fine Arts (CFA) student Paul Christian Ainza, graduating BFA student Julian Gabriel Trinidad, and BFA freshman Arvelle Nils Irik Valdez. This year’s jury was composed of independent curator and artist Ceres Marie Canilao, former student of Prof. Darnay Demetillo; visual artist and UPB Fine Arts alumnus Silivino Dulnuan; and Grace Celeste Subido, Associate Professor and former colleague of Demetillo, who served as jury chair. Canilao announced the name of the awardee by reading out the jury’s message. Maisa Demetillo delivered a heartfelt message on behalf of the Demetillo family. Malto received a Certificate of Recognition and an award cheque. He also received a box full of quality art materials, gifted by Gloria Orden, friend and mentee of Prof. Demetillo. Hosted by DLLA faculty Jasmin Bayquen, the ceremony was attended by faculty members, students, alumni, and guests, including National Artist for Film Kidlat Tahimik. The event concluded with the opening of the DDAA 2026 Exhibit, featuring painting-based works by the five nominees created within the Academic Year 2025-2026. The UPB community and friends are invited to view the exhibit, which will run until August 7, 2026, at the Darnay Demetillo Art Space. The exhibit is open on weekdays, from 9AM to 4PM. Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK) Celebrates Their 35th Anniversary with the Exhibit "Stories We Tell" at Fundacion Sansó Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK), the Philippines' first and only organization of artists dedicated to children's illustration, celebrates their 35th year with "Stories We Tell", an exhibit that presents the illustrator as storyteller. Each participating artist has illustrated the beginning and the end to an original story they each imagined. Without words, the compositions encourage viewers to draw out the narratives, the way picture books do for kids. Among the participating artists are UP Baguio Fine Arts faculty Jandy A. Carvajal and UPB alumni Clarisse Alfonso, Arvi Delos Reyes, Jem Delos Reyes and Ja Amores. This milestone exhibit led Sir Jandy to recall his first foray into illustrating for kids in the late 90s, and how he was inspired by one of the OG Inkies, Isabel "Pepper" Roxas, who was also his teacher in an undergraduate illustrating class. Now also an artist-educator, Sir Jandy is glad that the art of illustrating for children continues to thrive in (and even outside) the country, with younger generations of Filipino artists taking up the pen (and paper, and all sorts of materials). In 2019, he introduced Illustrating for Children as a topic in the FA 192 Art Workshop class. Since then, the course, inspiring and training potential visual storytellers for the youth, has been offered almost every academic year in UP Baguio. "Stories We Tell" opens on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 3PM at Fundacion Sansó, 34 V. Cruz St., San Juan City, Metro Manila. The exhibit will run until August 8, 2026. Fundacion Sansó is open Monday to Saturday, 10AM to 4PM. Admission to the museum is free.

UPB College of Arts and Communication Dean Io M. Jularbal, Ph.D. wrote a discussion paper about community-driven heritage preservation in Mayoyao, Ifugao! Check out his paper below: 🌾 NEW DISCUSSION PAPER: Community-Driven Heritage Preservation in Mayoyao ⛰️🛖 How can indigenous communities balance the economic benefits of tourism while keeping the cultural and ecological integrity of their ancestral landscapes intact? When it comes to safeguarding landmarks like our majestic rice terraces, true sustainability begins with a community-initiated approach. We are pleased to announce the release of Discussion Paper, "Preserving Mayoyao Heritage: A Community-initiated Approach to Sustainable Heritage-Tourism and LGU Cultural Policy Development in Safeguarding Rice Terraces." Authored by Io M. Jularbal, Ph.D., this study is published under our Local Regional Studies Network (LRSN) X Cordillera Studies Center UP Baguio. It provides a vital look into how local governance and grassroots indigenous initiatives can work hand in hand to protect Ifugao heritage. 🔍 Key Highlights from the Paper: 🌾 Community-Initiated Preservation: Shifting from top-down conservation models to grassroots strategies where the community takes center stage in safeguarding their ancestral domain. 🗺️ Sustainable Heritage-Tourism: Analyzing frameworks that promote responsible tourism without eroding the sacred traditions and traditional knowledge systems linked to the Mayoyao rice terraces. 🏛️ LGU Cultural Policy Integration: Exploring how local government units (LGUs) can institutionalize and fund sustainable cultural policies built on indigenous voices. 💡 Safeguarding Rice Terraces: Assessing the ecological, institutional, and socio-economic challenges of maintaining agricultural landscapes in changing modern economies. By strengthening local heritage policy through community empowerment, we can protect our historical landscapes for generations to come. 📖 Download the full discussion paper for FREE: https://cids.up.edu.ph/download/preserving-mayoyao-heritage/ #UPCIDS #LRSN #MayoyaoHeritage #IfugaoRiceTerraces #SustainableTourism #CulturalPolicy #IndigenousKnowledge #PublicPolicy #ResearchForChange

Last May 18, 2026, the Department of Communication held its planning and review for the revision of the BA Communication Program Curriculum at the CAC Smart Classroom. Asst. Prof. Christian Ezekiel M. Fajardo, chairperson of the Department of Communication, shared the findings from the recently-concluded ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Assessment to the faculty members of the department. The findings served as basis for setting the direction in revising the BA Communication curriculum. The activity then proceeded to breakout sessions where faculty members from each BA Communication discipline discussed the curricular revisions needed for their discipline. As a result, faculty members from the Broadcast Communication, Journalism, and Speech Communication disciplines presented courses that will be elevated to the core curriculum, courses that will be retained or added as major electives, and new courses that will be added to the program. The new courses presented to the meeting were designed to accommodate the growing needs of the industry and to further develop students who will be holistically adept to the field of Communication, while maintaining a strong expertise in their chosen area of specialization. Faculty members of the Department of Communication also discussed the proposed changes in the curriculum, including the addition of Communication and Culture as a core communication course, and the creation of COMM 198 (Internship) to harmonize and strengthen the internship program. The Department of Communication will continue their efforts to review and revise the BA Communication curriculum in the college-level planning and revision for CAC degree programs this June 2026. The college aims to implement the changes in the curriculum in the near future, as curricular revisions and changes are subject to careful planning, consultations, and meticulous review from the College level, to the University level, and to the UP System level. The Department of Communication is one of the two existing departments in the UP Baguio College of Arts and Communication. The Department of Communication houses the BA Communication program, offering areas of specialization in Broadcast Communication, Journalism, and Speech Communication.
